Stanley Conway

This is a research page about Ashtead Potters Ltd. decorator Stanley Conway. Stanley Conway's son, Peter Conway, has very kindly provided information and pictures of his father's time at Ashtead Potters.

Information from Peter Conway

"I have some information for you regarding my father’s time at Ashtead, some of it taken from his reference letter dated 20th November 1934. The letter is headed Ashtead Potters Limited (in voluntary liquidation), addressed 'TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN' and describes his employment at these works for the last 11 years. ‘He was mainly employed in the decorator’s shop, but during busy periods he was responsible for packing and despatch. He was in charge of all retail sales at the exhibitions and also at the factory.’ The letter is signed by Major Arthur Thomas Moore, Manager.

It is also known that he frequently accompanied William Godmon to demonstrations of throwing and decorating in various department stores around the UK such as Liberty, Army and Navy, Peter Jones, Heal’s, Harrods and Waring and Gillow.

I’ve enclosed two pics. The first shows him with a colleague (I assume at Ashtead) and the second taken with the Princess Royal. I’ve been giving this one some thought and I now think it could have been taken in 1924 at the Wembley Exhibition where, according to Edward Hallam’s book, items were purchased by the Royals from the Ashtead display."
